I thoroughly enjoyed browsing through the photos of Cowley. As an old Cowley girl (1971 - 76) it was great to reminisce those school days. Funny how a photo of some wall tiles can stir up long forgotten memories! I too remember Founders Day and the trip to the Town Hall to celebrate. It's so sad that the lovely old building has gone - but not completely forgotten thanks to your great photos.

My mum has asked if anyone has the School Magazine that her poem was printed (Patricia Longworth) And it would have been 1960's. If so could you please email (via the contact form) a copy or transcription of the poem.

Many Thanks,

Lee G. Layland

Glad you like it. I'm waiting on my mum digging out some Cowley Girls School stuff, and am still trying to research the soldiers (albeit slowly). :-D

The postcards are wonderful ! Thank you so much for all the work that you put into it.Windleshaw Abbey was especially interesting for to me to see as my mother and grandparents are buried there.I have a picture of a Street party that I would like to submit, I believe it was VE Day, Powell Street ,Sutton. What a lovely site! My Gran used to have some of these postcards but I hadn't seen these images for over 40 years. I can remember Church Street before it was modernised/pedestrianised. I lived in St Helens from 1963-1978, and went to Cowley Girls School, in the days of the bottle green uniform! :)

In answer to your question Mark Abbott, my gr. uncle was Joseph Critchlow Ser.No.426165 in the Royal Engineers 419th coy. He was killed in action 9/4/1918. He is commemorated on the Loos memorial and also the memorial in St.Helens

If Edna Smith can let me have her relatives service number, I'll see if I have anything in my records.

I am researching the St Helens Royal engineers in WW1.
